University Extension as a path to Social Innovation: analysis from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul

Inovações sociais são inovaçoes que intentam dar respostas às necessidades e problemas sociais, expandindo os instrumentos e as capacidades para a participação dos agentes na construção de soluções, potencialmente partindo da interação e colaboração de diversos agentes, organizações e instituições. As universidades desempenham papéis ativos no contexto dessas inovações, na medida em que se engajam para cumprir a sua terceira missão, relacionando-se às demandas da sociedade. Este trabalho investiga como as universidades desempenham papéis no contexto dessas inovações, tendo como objeto de análise a extensão universitária na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. Aplicou-se um questionário focalizado em uma amostra das ações de extensão desenvolvidas na Universidade. As ações mapeadas contribuem para a formulação e operacionalização de inovações de caráter social, corroborando o entendimento de que universidades exercem importantes papéis nesse contexto. Contribuem, principalmente, para a provisão de recursos e de soluções para a comunidade envolvida no projeto.

Social innovations are innovations that attempt to respond to social needs and problems, expanding the instruments and capacities for the participation of agents in the construction of solutions, potentially starting from the interaction and collaboration of several agents, organizations and institutions. Universities play active roles in the context of these innovations, as they engage to fulfill their third mission, relating to the demands of society. This work investigates how universities play roles in the context of these innovations, having as object of analysis the university extension at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. A survey focused on a sample of extension actions developed at the University was applied. The actions mapped contribute to the formulation and implementation of innovations of a social nature, corroborating the understanding that universities play important roles in this context. They mainly contribute to the provision of resources and solutions for the community involved in the project.
