Ensuring food security for the world's population depends on good sustainable practices regarding the use of environmental resources: soil and water can have their productive limits saturated due to exploitation without proper management. In tropical regions with a hot and dry climate, there is a water deficit for crops that demand a high volume of water. Thus, one of the alternatives to overcome this deficiency is the use of different sources for irrigation. Produced water (AP), which comes from the oil industry, is used as an irrigation technology. Thus, the objective of this work is to present a brief review of the literature of the current scenario of the application of produced water in irrigation. The research revealed that many crops tolerate produced water when treated properly.
