The dissertation "The relationship between design and craftsmanship, from the perspective of postgraduate academic research in design in Brazil, from 2003 to 2023" observes the relationship between the two fields, based on the perspective of researchers from postgraduate design programs in the country carried out in the last 20 years. The research is halfway through (post-qualification) and identified 113 documents through a Systematic Mapping process (Petersen et al, 2008; Kitchenham 2011), including dissertations and theses that form the corpus to be analyzed. To date, quantitative data mapping has been carried out regarding Doctoral theses (19 publications). The main data collected were: in relation to the Regions of origin, State and Universities of the publications (see Fig.1), the majority of doctoral theses publications are from university programs in the Southeast region (85%, 16 publications). The majority of publications in this region are from Rio de Janeiro (55%) and the University that published the most was the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, PUC-RIO (30%, 6 publications). In the Southeast, they also presented research on the topic of Universities in the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. The other region that presented research was the Northeast region with 15% (3 theses, all from the state of Pernambuco and the Federal University of Pernambuco - UFPE). Regarding the timeline of publications on the topic, in the period analyzed (see Fig.2), it was observed that 2015 was the first year in which there were two publications, from universities other than PUC-RIO, and 2019 was the year peak of publications (4 theses). Finally, it was observed that 10 of the 19 theses had co- supervisors (see Fig.3). This survey clarified the need to qualitatively investigate why the data turned out this way. The question is: What is the relationship between the high number of publications in the Southeast and the history of founding these courses in Brazil? Are the authors who published theses in the Southeast from this region? What happened between 2015 and 2019 that may have influenced a greater number of publications on the topic? Why did more than half of the theses have co-advisors? To answer these questions, the research - of an exploratory-descriptive nature - must, first, map the history of development of postgraduate studies in Design in Brazil and the founding path of their respective programs. Then, carry a biographical and bibliographical survey of the thesis authors and their advisors, seeking evidence of their professional and academic trajectories in the fields of design and crafts, whether in relation to publication and presentation of work, participation in research groups or laboratories of research. Finally, based on this survey that maps the most important interlocutors, the research is directed towards collecting oral history reports from selected researchers, through semi- structured interviews. Having as its ultimate objective the systematization of a look at the relationship between design and crafts in Brazil over the last 20 years, the research is based on doctoral theses published on the topic, to map actors and emerging aspects of the relationship.
