Advances in modeling and solving capabilities in the crude-oil refineryscheduling has recently addressed its optimization more accurately by consideringwider scope, scale and complexities of the refining process network. In this work, wepresent examples of these enhancements such as a) a decomposition strategy to enablethe optimization of large scale problems; b) a linearization procedure to includenonlinear quality information for blending of streams in an mixed-integer linearprogramming (MILP) model; and c) multiple distillation units in the form of cascadedtowers. We highlight a case optimized in less than 6 minutes whereby the use of thelinearization strategy for the nonlinear blending resulted in both an improvement of2.82% in the objective function and in a reduced gap of the decomposed solutions.
