CO2 CAPTURE FROM FLUE GAS USING MEMBRANE CONTACTORS

The addition of a purge for the liquid phase in a membrane contactor system was evaluated. A polypropylene hollow fiber membrane module was used to separate a CO2/N2 gas mixture by using distilled water or a NaOH solution as absorbent. The effect of purge ratio (0 and 0.3), liquid temperature (10, 20 and 30 °C) and type of absorbent (distilled water and NaOH solution) on the CO2 absorbed flux was evaluated. The use of a purge and higher liquid flow enhanced the CO2 absorption efficiency. However, increasing the liquid temperature resulted in a loss of CO2 fluxes due to the lower solubility of CO2 into the liquid phase, even when using NaOH (chemical absorbent).
