From comic to horror: images transitions of the clown in consumer society

Este ensaio efetuou uma análise da simbologia do palhaço nos tempos atuais possuindo como foco aindústria do entretenimento. A partir de um histórico do século XIX ao XXI que acompanha astransições tecnológicas e midiáticas dentro da sociedade de consumo, a imagem dos palhaçostransitou não apenas dentro do campo da comicidade como extrapolou fronteiras e ganhou forças nogênero de terror, principalmente no cinema. Investigamos esse fenômeno no qual os cartazes decircos com desenhos de palhaços no século XX assumiram um papel importante nesta nova transição.O novo paradigma dos palhaços sombrios revela consequências para além das plataformas demidiáticas que provocou mudanças de consumo e de comportamento em relação aos palhaçostradicionais.

This paper carried out an analysis of the symbolism of the clown in the present times focusing on theentertainment industry. As of history from the 19th to the 21st century which accompaniestechnological and media transitions within the consumer society, the image of the clowns has movednot only within the field of comedy but has crossed borders and gained strength in the horror genre.This essay investigated this phenomenon in which circus posters with clown drawings in the 20thcentury have assumed an important role in this new transition. The new paradigm of the dark clownsreveals consequences beyond the media platforms that caused changes of consumption and behaviorin relation to traditional clowns.
