Estratégias concorrenciais entre sistemas operacionais: Microsoft e Android

Competitive strategies between operational systems: Microsoft and Android

O setor de telefonia móvel passou por um conjunto de transformações significativas desde o final do século passado. A síntese disso está no aspecto atual dos aparelhos móveis que em nada são semelhantes com os dispositivos móveis do final século passado. As mudanças nas funcionalidades destes dispositivos é reflexo da cooperação e da concorrência que envolveu diferentes atores no sistema de inovação e que culminaram, nos dias atuais, no papel preponderante dos sistemas operacionais. Duas estratégias se mostram relevantes para serem analisadas. A primeira é o desenvolvimento das plataformas ou versões de licença “fechada”, encabeçada pela Microsoft, e a segunda é a estratégia diferenciada de licenciamento aberto da Google com o sistema Android. Ao avaliar estas estratégias, este estudo aventa a possibilidade de que as estratégias traçadas pela Google parecem mais bem sucedidas em um cenário no qual os serviços são cada vez mais o principal meio de renda das empresas de alta tecnologia.

The mobile phone sector has undergone a series of significant transformations since the end of the last century. The synthesis of this is in the current aspect of mobile devices that are in no way similar to the mobile devices of the last century. The changes of devices’ functionality is reflect of the cooperation and competition between different actors in system of innovation and in the current days, of the preponderant role of the operating systems. Two strategies are relevant. The first is the development of platforms (or “closed” license versions), headed by Microsoft, and the second is Google's differentiated open licensing strategy with the Android system. In evaluating these strategies, this study raises the possibility that the strategies outlined by Google seem more successful in a scenario in which services are increasingly the main means of income for high-tech companies.
