Este artigo investiga a floriografia como aspecto simbólico e social na era vitoriana e sua adaptação no Brasil do século XIX. Com base em dois dicionários floriográficos, um inglês e outro brasileiro, e no modelo da roda de emoções de Plutchik, comparam-se diferenças e semelhanças entre os significados atribuídos às flores nos dois países. Utilizando metodologias do design, foram catalogadas 1.134 plantas, indicando possíveis interpretações sobre a circulação do imaginário floriográfico e sua adaptação ao contexto cultural brasileiro.

This article investigates floriography as a symbolic and social aspect of the Victorian era and its adaptation in 19th-century Brazil. Based on two floriographic dictionaries, one English and one Brazilian, and Plutchik’s wheel of emotions, it compares the differences and similarities in the meanings attributed to flowers in both countries. Using design-based methodologies, 1,134 plants were cataloged, offering possible interpretations of the circulation of floriographic imagery and how it was adapted to the Brazilian cultural context.
