Paper interactivity in information design: a historical review of movable books

Este artigo trata do estudo dos primórdios da interatividade em papel e surgimento dos livros móveis no Ocidente. Apesar de comumente estarem associados ao universo da literatura infantil, os livros interativos nasceram com a finalidade de compilar, organizar e auxiliar na visualização da informação, tendo como exemplo o uso das volvelles, abas e dobraduras a partir do século XIII. Esses recursos foram usados em livros de caráter científico, de anatomia e astronomia, como recurso informacional de forma a tornar informações complexas mais visuais, claras e objetivas, permitindo a interação de usuários. O artigo utiliza-se de uma revisão bibliográfica e documental para organizar a linha do tempo dos livros móveis entendendo suas especificidades em cada contexto histórico a partir de autores que tratam sobre o tema e do estudo do material em acervos digitais de bibliotecas e museus dos Estados Unidos e Europa.

This article explores the origins of paper interactivity and the emergence of movable books in the Western world. Although they are commonly associated with children's literature, interactive books were originally created to compile, organize, and aid in the visualization of information, exemplified using volvelles, flaps, and folds since the 13th century. These resources were used in scientific books on anatomy and astronomy as informational tools to make complex data more visual, clear, and objective, allowing user interaction. The article is based on a bibliographic and documentary review to organize the timeline of movable books, understanding their specificities in each historical context through authors who address the topic and through the study of materials in digital collections of libraries and museums in the United States and Europe.
