The 21st century brings changes and challenges that impact the economy, society, as well as built and natural environments. Knowledge is seen as an opportunity and a driving force in the global market. Thus, cities invest in innovation and human capital, by increasing the quality of place and urban vitality, which are essential to attract and retain talent and businesses. In this context, innovation districts emerge under the paradigms of Knowledge-based Urban Development and the quintuple helix innovation model. However, the literature still lacks indicators to measure urban vitality for planning these spaces. This work aims to systematically structure the knowledge on urban vitality and its indicators to support the planning of vibrant innovation territories, and to explore the potential to integrate these indicators into city information models (CIM).
