Dementia is a disabling disease that alters the person-environment relationship. Objective: To describe the family members' perception of Fleming–Bennett's environmental design principles, in the categories of safety, stimulation, socialization and familiarity, and the modifications made at home. Method: Qualitative study, convenience sample. Family members of elderly people with dementia (n=8) participated. Data collection included interviews about the elderly and the environment. Content analysis was used. Results: Participants reported that the main adaptations of the environment are related to Safety; as for Stimulation, they refer to the presence of affection-memory objects in the environment; and as for the category Familiarity and Socialization, they refer to be complex because they involve the physical environment and people, especially in the advanced stages. Conclusion: Environmental modifications are made intuitively, with security being the most followed principle. They highlight that knowing the Fleming-Bennett principles could facilitate the construction of a more suitable environment.
