Abstract:
The search for strategic materials that exhibit an enhanced performance when exposed to simultaneous demands such as wear, corrosion and structural resistance and operating temperature, that has been inscreasing in recent years. The synergetic effects of the different phenomena accelerate degradation requiring distintic structural and surface properties. To minimize the mismatch of properties material systems with a gradient of properties can be processed combining different processing techiniques. This study explores the protection of metallic components with hard, high temperature ceramic materials using Plasma Transferred arc hardfacing. It is aimed to produce a layered coating to smooth the dissimilar characteristics of the metallic substrate and the ceramic layer. Two processing procedures are presented and discussed regarding the synthesis of almina and aluminides during deposition.
