Urban surfaces as expressive and communicative resources for urban digital signage systems: the project Luzes da Praça

This paper discusses the potential of urban surfaces in urban digital signage projects. To investigate this issue, the article presents the project Luzes da Praça, an experimental signaling system whose design is derived from a sociospatial analysis based on the surfaces of the Raul Soares Square, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. From this project some effects are examined, and they are threefold: the expressive and communicative value of urban surfaces; the potential of digital resources and their impact on the tasks of the designer; and, finally, the role of design in the urban experience.
