Life, history, fashion and activism: a systematic literature review of women participation in the tailoring profession

Realizou-se uma revisão sistemática da literatura para analisar a dedicação das mulheres à alfaiataria, profissão tradicionalmente atribuída aos homens, na qual a participação feminina foi historicamente desconsiderada devido ao seu caráter doméstico. Utilizaram-se as bases de dados Web of Science, Scopus e Scielo para a busca na literatura, resultando em 22 artigos selecionados. Esses artigos foram divididos em 3 categorias: “estudos biográficos”, “revisões históricas” e “estudos de caso e de campo”. Em geral, esses trabalhos discutem as mulheres e suas relações com o trabalho da costura em contextos históricos e atuais. Embora aspectos sobre a participação feminina no ofício da alfaiataria tenham sido apontados, observou-se a necessidade de aprofundar o assunto em trabalhos futuros. Este artigo faz parte de um projeto de dissertação de mestrado em Design da FAAC/UNESP que visa documentar a participação feminina contemporânea no ofício da alfaiataria.

A systematic literature review analyzed women's dedication to tailoring, a profession traditionally attributed to men, to which female participation has historically been disregarded due to its domestic nature. Web of Science, Scopus and Scielo databases were used to scan the literature, resulting in 22 articles selected. These articles were divided in 3 categories: “biographical studies”, “historical reviews” and “case and field studies”. In general, these works discuss women and their relations with sewing labor in historical and current contexts. Although aspects about the female participation in tailoring labor were pointed out, the need to explore the subject further is clear from these works. This paper is part of a MSc thesis project in Design research at FAAC/UNESP, which aims to document the contemporary female participation in the tailoring profession.
