João Manuel R. S. Tavares

João Manuel R.S. Tavares is graduated in Mechanical Engineering from University of Porto, Portugal (1992). In 1995, he obtained a M.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the field of Industrial Informatics, also at University of Porto. In 2001, he obtained a Ph.D. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the same University. From 1995 to 2000, he was researcher at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. Since 2001, he has been senior researcher and project coordinator at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto between 2001 and 2011, and since then he has been Associate Professor in the same department. Since 2001, he has been supervisor and co-supervisor of several M.Sc. and Ph.D. thesis. He is co-author of more than 550 articles in national and international journals and conferences and co-editor of 30 international books and guest-editor of several special issues of international journals. Also, he has been evolved in several research projects, both as researcher and as scientific coordinator. He has been co-chairman of various international conferences, including ESM'2014, ICCEBS, CompIMAGE, VipIMAGE, EUROMEDIA 2008, BioDENTAL, IMAGAPP 2009 and TMSi 2010, and of numerous mini-symposia, workshops and thematic sessions, and a member of organizing and scientific committees of several national and international conferences. He has been a member of several national and international journal editorial boards and Editor-in-Chief of the T&F journal “Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering: Imaging & Visualization” and Co-editor of the Springer book series “Lecture Notes in Computational Vision and Biomechanics”. His main research areas include computational vision, computational mechanics, scientific visualization, human-computer interaction and new product development.
