Architectural typography as a protagonist in a system of visual identity: the pioneering case of the Banco de São Paulo

This paper presents a case study of the building of the Bank of São Paulo, designed by the architect Álvaro Botelho and is one of the most representative examples of Art Decor architecture in São Paulo. The building contains an interesting set of typographical markings which could well be described as a pioneering visual identity system applied to architecture.The style of Art Decor, by combining the language of the modernist avant-garde of the early twentieth century to more traditional solutions still linked to ornamental roots, was particularly abundant in the use of architectural typography, widely used as an integral part of the architectural ensemble. In the case of the Bank of São Paulo, this phenomenon can be observed in a broad sense, since we encountered several typographic solutions both in terms of technique and materials, as well as the different locations where these inscriptions appear on the building. All occurrences demonstrate a consistent pattern in terms of typographic design, which may be noticed from the plans of the building, where the manually drawn letters composing the label and the titles of the various plans exhibit very similar traits to the typography used in the different inscriptions found throughout the building. This fact seems to indicate that this typographic design was probably developed in the architect's own office before gaining their final forms on the building itself, thus consisting in a pioneering system of visual identity.
