About the Event

This edition of CIDI 2013 brought together the 6th Information Design International Conference (CIDI 2013), the5th InfoDesign Brazil and the 6th Information Design Student Conference (CONGIC) and was a joint venture between SBDI and Post-Graduate Program in Design at UFPE, hold on the UFPE campus in Recife from 10th to 13th September, 2013. This year’s edition was particularly special, as it was exactly 10 years since the 1st edition of CIDI and 11 years since the SBDI first began, returning to the place where the SBDI was founded and to the institution that originated these events: UFPE / Design.

At previous congresses (Recife, 2003; São Paulo, 2005, Curitiba, 2007, Rio de Janeiro, 2009; Florianópolis, 2011) amongst our honoured international guests, we have had the pleasure of receiving Professor Michael Twyman (UK), Karel van der Waarde (Netherlands), Bernard Darras (France), Patricia Wright (UK), Phil Baines (UK), Paul Mijksenaar (Netherlands), Heiner Jacob (Germany), Norberto Chaves (Spain), Karen Schriver (US), Yuri Engelhardt (Netherlands), Catherine Dixon (UK), Maria Cossío (Mexico), and from amongst our Brazilian researchers Rita Couto, Priscila Farias, Edna Lucia Cunha Lima, Joaquim Redig, Rejane Spitz, Solange Coutinho, Luiz Antonio Coelho, Chico Homem de Melo, Monica Moura, Lucia Pimentel, Luciano Meira, Ruth Nogueira, Alice Cybis, Fábio Campos, Luciano Guimarães, sharing knowledge and views on important issues regarding information design. As Keynotes, in Recife 2013, we were delighted to have the presence of the following researchers: Peter Simlinger (Austria); Aaron Marcus (US); Jorge Frascara (Canada / Mexico); Guillermina Nöel (Mexico), Professor Richard Meyer (US); Carla Spinillo (UFPR) and Silvio Meira (UFPE / CESAR). An innovation for CIDI2013 was the inclusion of five theme tracks, which had the collaboration of two chairs from different institutions (Brazil and abroad) who had organized and followed the ad hoc committee in selecting the articles for the oral and poster presentations, and at the closing session was responsible for presenting a report on the discussions and innovations revealed within each theme track.

One further innovation was the Poster Session, which took place in the rooms of the respective theme tracks, with specific times for each presentation.

It is important to emphasize that InfoDesign Brazil – the Brazilian Congress of Information Design, was created as a national event to ensure a regular forum for Brazilian researchers in the area, however in the future, it is intended that CIDI, in its international capacity, will be held in other countries.

The CONGIC, in its turn, brings together undergraduates and graduates in the area, with its own Scientific Committee, working along the same lines as the CIDI with thematic tracks and chairs from educational institutions in Pernambuco and Brazil. At the end of the event, the best projects receives awards from the committee formed by the chairs.

Brazil’s insertion in the area of Information Design on the world stage is consolidated by CIDI2013, providing prominence and exchange of national production, as well as contact between Brazilian and international researchers, and between student and professional participants through discussions on the state of the art of Information Design. An example of that is the Information Design Journal, published by John Benjamins Publishing Company, which will have as General Editor Carla Spinillo (from Universidade Federal do Paraná) and, as Editorial Manager, Solange Coutinho (from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco) during three years from 2014.

More than 500 papers have been submitted, from nineteen countries (including Brazil), covering the themes of Communication, Education, Society, Technology and Theory and History. Following the rigorous assessment by our Scientific and Ad Hoc Committees, this Book of Proceedings presents 187 items selected for the 2013 edition. Few of them however, could not be presented at the conferences, although they are published in a special section of this book. We extend our thanks to all those who participated on the Scientific, Ad Hoc and Organizing Committees for their dedication and commitment to the success of these events.

Enjoy the Reading!
