The meaning of design, according to Joaquim Redig
The meaning of design, according to Joaquim Redig
Full Article:
In 1977, amid the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial (College of Design) – ESDI, the first work drafted in Brazil on conceptualizing design was published: About industrial design, conceived by designer Joaquim Redig. Was it not for its merits in proposing ideas and concepts to be investigated against the context of its writing and the current time, the book relies on typographical and diagrammatic criteria in order to promote a certain reading and reception of the text. Its typographic choices and layout imply an appropriation of the text following the desired logic by Redig, while emphasizes its didactic aspect. An author and a creator in graphic design, Joaquim Redig built a work affiliated to the usual affection for manifesto as a known Modernism characteristic. The book can be analysed as a languages crossing , almost an ideogrammatic configuration since it reconciles graphic expression, verbal discourse and rationality – core elements in information design. This article aims to locate the author and his work in its original context of production of meaning, evaluating the persistence of the ideas contained therein to the present day and, if possible, recovering them.
