Readability of printed handouts used in kindergarten education

This report presents the final outcome of an undergraduate research-training proposal conducted to analyze the readability of printed handouts used in kindergarten education and propose an alternative layout application. The theories of Lupton (2006) and Tondreau (2009) were used as background to discuss the elements present and the quality of the layout composition on the printed handouts. Copies of textbooks used in the initial levels of early childhood education were also studied to identify potential layout problems and therefore direct the course of this undergraduate research training. Based on focus group research conducted with kindergarten teachers and considering all directions identified in the theoretical framework, an alternative layout application was developed. To validate the alternative layout by the user, the same analysis that was carried out on the studied specimens was also applied to the alternative layout in order to finalize this research training, which results are presented and discussed throughout this report.
