The ancient technologies of text composition have made Latin America dependent of typefaces created by developed countries. But in the late twentieth century, after the advent and popularization of desktop publishing and and self-publishing vector programs, type design became popular, including the Latin American countries in the list of producers/distributors. In this paper, we analyse the cases of Brazil and Argentina and highlight historical similarities in the process of appropriation of technology and typographical knowledge, with some particularities of each country.
