Faces of Design Types: analysis of typographic features used in the production of books of the sixteenth century

In this article, we appreciate the typographic features present in the book La Geografia of Claudio Tolomeu, printed during the sixteenth century, in this collection of rare books belonging to the Library of the Instituto Ricardo Brennand, in order to analyze the composition of pages and the typographical differences existing as the design and use of types. We discuss about the influence of the technological limitations of the time on the regularity of the layout and harmonious coexistence between chancelaresco italic and roman Renaissance. We have reported about the presence of features found in the ancient books that went into disuse as subscriptions, claims and use the paragraph described by Saltz (2010) as inverted pyramid text, these features aesthetically the book that marked the sixteenth century.
