Presentation
The topic we have proposed for this conference, “Knowledge-based Design”, is an invitation to reflect on the nature of design knowledge, how we represent and how we use it in creative processes in digital environments. Design is a high-demand cognitive task that involves a combination of explicit and tacit knowledge, clearly stated rules or relations and heuristics derived from experience.
Although every designer has preferences to approach design problems, they share some characteristics such as the ability to quickly generate a small number of possible alternatives, the ability to develop the problem as well the solution in parallel through co-evolution and the ability to integrate knowledge from different disciplines, all of which are very distinctive features of our work.
These complex mental processes rely heavily on external structures of representation. What we see as formalization through any type of model does not necessarily capture all the complexity of the design. That is why we want to wonder about the ambiguity of the design problems, the mechanisms behind decision making, the role of digital media, the boundaries between explicit and tacit, and our ability to creatively manipulate our own knowledge.
We want to thank all of the authors who have embraced this call and who have contributed with their work towards the success of this conference. We thank the CEI who have placed their trust in our institution, especially to its President, Maria Elena Tosello for guiding us in this process, advisers Pedro Soza and Pablo Herrera for their continued counsel and Eduardo Hamuy and David Sperling for their important work in the Editorial Committee, who has had the difficult task of selecting the articles included in this book, previously evaluated by the members of the International Scientific Committee. We also thank our University which has supported us in organizing this event from the very beginning through its authorities, faculties, students, alumni, and technical and administrative staff, especially Nina Hormazábal Director of the Department of Architecture and Pedro Serrano Director of the University Editorial. Very special thanks to Volker Mueller from Bentley Systems and Glenn Katz from Autodesk, who have contributed to the success of this academic initiative.
Finally, I want to thank all the members of the COL for making this conference possible and welcome all the participants to SIGraDi 2013 Valparaiso.
